Work with us...

Our future is rooted in possibility...

We are working toward a world where community-centered, affirming therapy is not a privilege, but a norm. Imani ya Kupinga is building a broader ecosystem that challenges the exploitative foundations of the current mental health industry. We envision a practice with locations in both Detroit and Southfield, staffed by majority Black, Detroit-based therapists who are passionate about serving the people and communities they come from.

How we're different

image.png
We are a cooperative.
That means shared ownership, shared responsibility, and shared care. Our therapists co-regulate with each other and make decisions collectively, ensuring our clients benefit from an ecosystem of support rather than only a single provider.

We validate your reality.
Our work is not just about helping you cope with your thoughts. It’s about naming the systems and addressing intergenerational history that impacts you and walking with you as you find your own point of empowerment.

We serve as we are.
We are resisters and show up as full humans, not as experts perched above our clients. This opens up a level of vulnerability and trust that many clients have never experienced in mental health care.

We provide barrier-free support.
Whether that means offering sliding scale options, telehealth sessions, peer referrals, or cultural congruence in care, we strive to make healing accessible, affirming, and non-pathologizing.

Our approach

We plan to expand our cooperative model, bringing more therapists into worker-ownership and deepening our infrastructure for long-term sustainability. We are creating funding pathways and inclusive processes that serve clients without insurance or those navigating financial hardship ensuring that care isn’t limited by bureaucracy or income. We also aim to strengthen our partnerships with community mental health services, enabling smooth and supportive referrals when clients need care beyond our scope.

Ultimately, we see IYK as a hub for wraparound support, where clients can build their own healing teams and feel truly held by a network of care. A space where therapists have access to co-regulation, mutual support, and creative practice. A practice where liberation is not just a framework but a daily commitment.
